How much padding sits around the ask. Ten ways to request the same estorno, from bare to fully hedged.
The control text · practical
Bom dia. Fico no aguardo.
Where the two part
Brazilian · the base
Softens with diminutives and with por gentileza, será que. The diminutive is a politeness device, not a size marker.
European · the contrast
Softens with se faz favor, importa-se de, and with the imperfect used as a conditional. Diminutives carry less politeness load.
10 options
BR Estorne o valor.
EU Estorne o montante.
The tellA command with nothing around it.
Unambiguous, and appropriate when you have already asked twice.
Reads as an order. With a stranger it costs you the goodwill you may need later.
BR Estorne o valor, por favor.
EU Estorne o montante, por favor.
The tellOne softener, at the end, doing minimal work.
The universal minimum. Correct everywhere and never wrong.
It softens the tone without softening the demand, which some readers find worse than the bare form.
BR Peço o estorno do valor.
EU Solicito o reembolso do montante.
The tellA verb of asking in the present, with no modal.
Formal without being cold, and it is the register institutions mirror back.
It states rather than asks, so there is no room built in for a no.
BR Você poderia estornar o valor?
EU Podia estornar o montante, se faz favor?
The tellA conditional turning a demand into a question.
The most useful single softener in the language: it costs one word and buys real room.
It invites the answer no, grammatically speaking, which a statement does not.
BR Queria pedir o estorno do valor.
EU Queria pedir o reembolso do montante.
The tellA past tense doing present work. Not quero, not quereria.
More natural than the conditional in speech in both countries, and quietly advanced.
Overused it reads as timid, and in a complaint timidity is expensive.
Será que vocês poderiam verificar isso hoje?
The tellA whole clause of hedging in front of the actual question.
Distinctively Brazilian and very effective with a person: it makes the request collaborative.
Two hedges stacked. In writing to an institution it dilutes the ask.
Importa-se de verificar esta cobrança?
The tellLiterally do you mind, and the standard European move.
The correct register for Portugal and immediately more idiomatic than a translated poderia.
In Brazil it sounds foreign, and the enclitic pronoun comes attached to it.
Só um minutinho do seu tempo — é uma coisinha rápida.
The tellA diminutive on something that has no size.
A politeness device with no European equivalent, and it warms a request instantly.
It also shrinks the request. Applied to a complaint it can make the problem sound trivial.
BR Solicita-se o estorno do valor.
EU Solicita-se o reembolso do montante.
The tellNo agent at all: nobody is asking anybody.
Maximum formality with zero confrontation, and it removes the tu/você problem entirely.
It reads as a form rather than a person, and forms are easy to ignore.
Será que o senhor poderia, por gentileza, talvez verificar se seria possível o estorno?
The tellFour or more softeners in one sentence.
On the sheet as the deliberate failure case: it shows where politeness stops being politeness.
It reads as anxiety, invites delay, and buries the request so deep the reader may miss it.
