How the joke is made, and whether it is signalled. The domain where the two countries misread each other most often.
The control text · practical
Bom dia. Fico no aguardo.
Where the two part
Brazilian · the base
Tends to signal, warm up and include the listener in the joke. Irony that is not flagged risks being taken straight.
European · the contrast
Drier, later and often unflagged. A Brazilian ear can miss it entirely and read it as rudeness or as sincerity.
10 options
A assinatura foi cancelada em maio, né. E a cobrança chegou em agosto.
The tellA tag that invites you to notice the absurdity without stating it.
Efficient and warm, and it gives the other person a way to agree that something is ridiculous.
Unwritable above the conversational register, and it can read as passive-aggressive in a complaint.
Imagina, cobrar por um serviço cancelado. Coisa mais normal.
The tellA word that means the opposite of what it says, in a context that makes that obvious.
Distinctively Brazilian and hard to misread, because the flag does the work.
It commits you to a tone. Once ironic, the rest of the message has to hold that register.
Que bom que a assinatura continua tão ativa. Agradeço a dedicação.
The tellNo flag at all. The gap between the words and the situation is the joke.
Drier and sharper, and it is the default Portuguese mode.
A Brazilian reader may take it literally, and in writing it survives forwarding as sincerity, which is worse.
Houve um pequeno problema: cobraram três meses de um serviço cancelado.
The tellA word too small for the thing it describes.
Correct in both countries and it works in formal register, which most humour does not.
Its effect depends on the reader noticing the mismatch. Missed, it just understates.
Devia ter conferido a fatura antes, confesso. Mas a cobrança continua indevida.
The tellA concession about yourself, placed before the actual point.
Disarms without conceding anything material, and it makes the complaint harder to dismiss as entitled.
Give away too much and you have supplied their defence for them.
Já mandei esse comprovante umas mil vezes.
The tellA number nobody is meant to believe.
Ordinary in Brazilian speech and instantly legible as complaint rather than as data.
In a written dispute it weakens you: an exaggeration on the record makes the accurate parts look negotiable.
Um serviço que só funciona na hora de cobrar.
The tellOne word carrying two senses at once.
The most portable form of humour across registers, because nothing about it is informal.
It is the hardest to produce in a second language, and a near miss is more conspicuous than no attempt.
Conforme o disposto na minha paciência, item único…
The tellLegal register applied to something that has no legal standing.
Funny precisely because both countries share the bureaucratic register being mocked.
It requires the reader to be on your side already, which in customer service they are not.
Anchor A as written. A complaint with no tonal colour whatsoever.
The tellNothing to notice.
The correct choice with an institution, in an exam, and in any text that might be forwarded.
It builds no relationship, and with an individual on the other end that is a real loss.
BR Né? — flagged, warm, Brazilian
EU Agradeço a dedicação. — dry, unflagged, Portuguese
The tellThe same intent, two mechanisms, each opaque to the other side.
On the sheet because this is where the two standards misread each other with the least awareness that it is happening.
Unverified as a generalisation. It is a working hypothesis about a real phenomenon, not a documented finding.
