Norma culta and norma falada

Which grammar you are writing — the one taught or the one spoken. In Brazil that gap is wide, and it carries weight the grammar itself does not.

Portuguese · Register · REG-04

The control text · argumentative

Every option below rewrites this text.

Where the two part

Brazilian · the base

A genuinely wide gap. Educated speakers routinely produce forms they would correct in their own writing, and the mismatch is socially loaded inside Brazil.

European · the contrast

A narrower gap. Speech sits closer to the written standard, so fewer constructions have to be actively unlearned for formal writing.

10 options

REG-04a

Sentence-initial clitic

Brazilian

BR Me manda o comprovante.

EU Peço que me mandem o comprovante.

The tellA pronoun opening the sentence.

Gains

The clearest single case: universal in speech, absent from edited writing, and nobody is confused by either.

Costs

The written form has to be produced consciously every time, because the spoken one arrives first.

REG-04b

Existential ter

Brazilian

Tem muita gente que discorda. → Há muita gente que discorda.

The tellter for existence in speech, haver in writing.

Gains

A one-word swap with no other consequences, which makes it the cheapest correction available.

Costs

Há in Brazilian conversation sounds formal, so the swap is directional rather than an upgrade.

REG-04c

a gente for nós

Brazilian

A gente cancelou. → Cancelamos.

The tellSingular verb with plural meaning.

Gains

Correcting it also fixes everything downstream, since the agreement changes with it.

Costs

Nós in speech can read as stiff, so this is not a form you simply promote.

REG-04d

Reduced plural marking

Brazilian

Os professor relata → Os professores relatam

The tellOne plural marker where the written norm wants several.

Gains

The written form is Anchor B as it stands, so the target is already on the page.

Costs

This is the item most loaded socially inside Brazil, and it is worth being clear that the loading is social rather than grammatical.

REG-04e

Preposition swapped

Brazilian

assistir o debate → assistir ao debate

The tellAny of the regência swaps on GRM-07.

Gains

An examiner is specifically looking for these, so the return on attention is high.

Costs

There is no pattern to generalise from — it is a list.

REG-04f

Tonic pronoun as object

Brazilian

Vi ele → Vi-o · Eu o vi

The tellA subject pronoun in an object slot.

Gains

The written alternatives are both available in Brazil, so there is a choice rather than a single fix.

Costs

Both written forms sound European or bookish in Brazilian speech, which is why the spoken form persists.

REG-04g

Indicative after achar que

Brazilian

Acho que é indevido. — accepted in writing too, in most contexts

The tellA verb of opinion with the indicative.

Gains

On the sheet because the gap is not always a gap: this one has largely closed, and treating it as an error is over-correction.

Costs

Which verbs have closed and which have not is genuinely unsettled, so confidence here is misplaced.

REG-04h

Full agreement in speech

Brazilian

Os professores relatam, said aloud, in a meeting

The tellWritten-standard agreement produced in conversation.

Gains

The right register for a presentation, an interview or an oral exam, and it is what educated Brazilian speech does in those settings.

Costs

In casual conversation it can read as performing education rather than speaking.

REG-04i

Hypercorrection

Brazilian

Eu lhe vi ontem. — a written-sounding form that is simply wrong

The tellA form reached for because it sounds formal, used where the grammar does not allow it.

Gains

Worth naming: the characteristic error of an advanced learner is no longer the spoken form, it is this.

Costs

It is wrong in both registers, so it buys nothing anywhere.

REG-04j

Register mixed within one text

Both

Solicito o estorno. Se der, até sexta seria ótimo. Sob pena de reclamação.

The tellThree heights in three sentences.

Gains

On the sheet because it is the most common real failure in advanced writing, and the easiest to catch by reading aloud.

Costs

An examiner reads it as loss of control rather than as range, which is the harshest possible interpretation.
