How the joke is made, and whether it is signalled. The thinnest sheet in this repository, and it says so on its face.
The control text · argumentative
Where the two part
Latin American · the base
Enormous country-to-country variation in how directly irony is flagged, and very little of it documentable from a desk.
Peninsular · the contrast
Peninsular irony is generally more direct and more openly aggressive than most Latin American registers — an impression rather than a finding.
10 options
The tellPraise against a contradicting fact. No flag.
Works in a formal register, which almost no other option here manages. Anchor A's ironic rung uses it.
Unflagged irony does not survive forwarding, and it hands the other side a grievance.
— El cargo es automático. — ¿En serio?
The tellA question that is not a question.
Compact and unmistakable in speech, where intonation carries it.
On the page genuinely ambiguous, and can read as sincere surprise.
The tellA word too small for the thing.
Correct in a formal register, and it survives translation into any of your three languages.
Its effect depends on the reader noticing. Missed, it just understates.
Su explicacioncita no resuelve nada.
The tellA diminutive on something serious. See GRM-10h.
Distinctively Spanish: the same suffix that softens sharpens here, and only context separates them.
Aggressive, and in writing it commits to a tone you cannot walk back.
He mandado ese comprobante mil veces.
The tellA number nobody is meant to believe.
Ordinary in speech and instantly legible as complaint rather than data.
In a written dispute it weakens you: an exaggeration on the record makes the accurate parts look negotiable.
The tellA concession about yourself, before the point. Note aun así — Anchor B uses it.
Disarms without conceding anything material, and makes the complaint harder to dismiss as entitled.
Give away too much and you have written their defence.
¿Quién paga el costo de la distracción? Quienes tienen menos apoyo en casa. — Anchor B's material as a question
The tellA question the writer answers immediately.
Changes the pace of a paragraph, and it is fully standard in argument.
Overused it reads as a school essay; a reader who answers differently has turned it against you.
The tellLegal register applied to something with no legal standing.
Funny because all three of your languages share the bureaucratic register being mocked.
It requires the reader on your side already, which in customer service they are not.
More openly aggressive irony, arriving sooner and less padded
The tellIrony that does not soften itself first.
Named so that Peninsular bluntness is not read as rudeness, and Latin American padding not as insincerity.
An impression rather than a documented description. Unverified, and the risk of stereotype is real.
Anchor A as written. No tonal colour whatsoever.
The tellNothing to notice.
The correct choice with an institution, in the DELE, and in anything that might be forwarded.
It builds no relationship, which with an individual is a real loss.
