How much padding sits around the ask. Italian softens with the conditional more than with vocabulary — and the conditional of courtesy is not a favour, it is the ordinary way to be civil.
The control text · practical
Buongiorno. Il 12 di questo mese mi è stato addebitato un importo di 89,90 euro che non riconosco. Immagino che si tratti di un errore: ho disdetto quel servizio a maggio e ne ho conservato la ricevuta. Le chiedo di accreditarmi la somma e di confermarmi per iscritto che l'abbonamento è stato chiuso. Se non riceverò riscontro entro venerdì, presenterò un reclamo. Resto in attesa.
Where the two part
Standard · the base
The conditional and the imperfect both soften. Le sarei grato se plus imperfect subjunctive is the high formal move and is entirely current.
Regional · the contrast
Regional speech softens with particles and intonation more than with morphology.
10 options
Storni l'importo. — formal imperative, no padding
The tellA command with nothing around it.
Unambiguous, and appropriate when you have already asked twice.
Reads as an order. With a stranger it spends goodwill you may need.
Le chiedo di accreditarmi la somma. — Anchor A
The tellA verb of asking in the present, no modal.
Anchor A uses it. Formal without being cold, and institutions mirror it back.
It states rather than asks, so no room for a no is built in.
Standard Vorrei chiederle di…
Regional Voglio chiederle di… — blunt in a way English I want is not
The tellVorrei rather than voglio.
The single most useful softener in Italian, one word long, and its absence is genuinely rude.
Almost none — which is why omitting it stands out so much.
Potrebbe controllare l'addebito?
The tellA conditional modal turning a request into a question.
Buys real room and costs one word. The default polite ask.
Grammatically it invites no, which a statement does not.
Le sarei grato se mi facesse sapere entro venerdì.
The tellConditional plus imperfect subjunctive across two clauses.
The high formal politeness move, correct and current, and it demonstrates GRM-04 at the same time.
Two verb forms have to be right at once, and it is heavy if repeated.
Volevo chiederle una cosa. — a past tense doing present work
The tellVolevo where the meaning is present.
Very natural in speech, and softer than the conditional without being obsequious.
In writing it can read as careless rather than as polite.
Le chiedo cortesemente di accreditarmi la somma.
The tellAn adverb carrying the courtesy.
Standard in business Italian and it raises the register without adding a clause.
Stacked with a conditional it starts to sound like a form letter.
Si prega di accreditare la somma entro venerdì.
The tellNo agent on either side. The most institutional formula available.
Maximum formality with zero confrontation, and it sidesteps Lei, tu and voi entirely.
It reads as a sign on a wall, and signs are easy to ignore.
Un attimino · una cosina veloce
The tellA diminutive on something with no size.
Warms a request instantly in speech, and attimino is ubiquitous.
It also shrinks the request. In a complaint it can make the problem sound trivial — and attimino is widely mocked.
Volevo chiederle se cortesemente potrebbe eventualmente verificare se fosse possibile lo storno…
The tellFive softeners in one sentence.
On the sheet as the deliberate failure case: it shows where politeness stops being polite.
Reads as anxiety, invites delay, and buries the request so deep the reader may miss it.
