How the joke is made, and whether it is signalled. The thinnest sheet in this repository, and it says so on its face.
The control text · argumentative
Where the two part
Standard · the base
Understatement and rhetorical questions carry most of it in writing.
Regional · the contrast
Strongly regional in flavour — Roman, Milanese and southern irony are recognisably different instruments, and the descriptions here are looser than anywhere else in the repository.
10 options
Complimenti per l'efficienza: l'abbonamento disdetto a maggio è ancora attivo.
The tellPraise placed against a fact that contradicts it. No flag.
The commonest ironic move in written Italian, and it works in a formal register where most humour does not.
Unflagged irony does not survive forwarding, and in a complaint it hands the other side a grievance.
— L'addebito è automatico. — Ma davvero?
The tellA question that is not a question.
Compact and unmistakable in speech, where intonation carries it.
On the page it is genuinely ambiguous, and can be read as sincere surprise.
C'è stato un piccolo problema: tre mesi di addebiti per un servizio chiuso.
The tellA word too small for the thing it describes.
Correct in formal register, which almost no other option here manages.
Its effect depends on the reader noticing the mismatch. Missed, it just understates.
Chi paga il costo della distrazione? Chi ha meno sostegno a casa. — Anchor B's material, put as a question
The tellA question the writer answers immediately.
Changes the pace of a paragraph and pulls the reader in. Fully standard in argument.
Overused it reads as a school essay, and a reader who answers differently has turned it against you.
Avrei dovuto controllare l'estratto conto prima, lo ammetto. Resta che l'addebito non è dovuto.
The tellA concession about yourself, placed before the point.
Disarms without conceding anything material, and makes a complaint harder to dismiss as entitled.
Give away too much and you have written their defence for them.
Ho mandato questa ricevuta mille volte.
The tellA number nobody is meant to believe.
Ordinary in speech and instantly legible as complaint rather than as data.
In a written dispute it weakens you: an exaggeration on the record makes the accurate parts look negotiable.
Un problemino da 89,90 euro al mese.
The tellA diminutive attached to something that is not small.
Distinctively Italian: the same suffix that softens on REG-02 sharpens here, and only context separates them.
It is one word away from sounding merely dismissive of your own complaint.
Direct, fast, mock-exasperated — the register of most Italian film comedy
The tellIrony that arrives at once and does not hide.
The variety you have most likely absorbed, because Roman speech dominates Italian cinema.
An impression rather than a documented description. Unverified.
Later, flatter, and often not signalled at all
The tellA remark that lands several seconds after it is made.
Named so that northern irony is not mistaken for coldness.
Also an impression. Unverified, and the risk of stereotype here is real.
Anchor A as written. No tonal colour whatsoever.
The tellNothing to notice.
The correct choice with an institution, in an exam, and in anything that might be forwarded.
It builds no relationship, which with an individual on the other end is a real loss.
