Congiuntivo range

How far the subjunctive reaches before the indicative takes over. The most discussed point in Italian usage, and the clearest single marker of an educated register.

The control text · argumentative

Every option below rewrites this text.

Where the two part

Standard · the base

Required after verbs of opinion, doubt, will and emotion, after a long list of conjunctions, and in the hypothetical period. Correct use is what an examiner reads as control.

Regional · the contrast

Eroding in speech nearly everywhere, and by reputation faster in the South. The erosion is real, uneven, and not a licence in writing.

10 options

GRM-04a

After a verb of opinion

Standard

I dati suggeriscono che funzioni. · Immagino che si tratti di un errore. — both anchors

The tellpenso / credo / immagino / suppongo che plus a subjunctive.

Gains

Both control texts contain one, so the target is already in front of you. This is the highest-frequency use.

Costs

Spanish uses the indicative here in the affirmative, so your instinct supplies the wrong mood every time.

GRM-04b

After doubt or denial

Standard

Non è detto che il divieto basti. · Dubito che sia un caso isolato.

The tellDoubt, denial and negation of certainty all take it.

Gains

The line is the same as in Spanish, so this half comes free.

Costs

Negating a verb of opinion changes the picture, and the interaction is where the errors sit.

GRM-04c

After will, wish or emotion

Standard

Voglio che mi venga accreditata la somma. · Mi dispiace che sia successo.

The tellWanting, hoping, fearing, regretting.

Gains

Transfers directly from both your languages. Cheapest subjunctive available.

Costs

Only when the subjects differ — same subject takes an infinitive, and using the subjunctive there is an error.

GRM-04d

After conjunctions

Standard

Benché lo strumento serva allo studio… · Affinché il divieto funzioni…

The tellbenché, sebbene, affinché, purché, a meno che, prima che, nonostante — a closed list that always takes it.

Gains

A list rather than a judgement, which makes it the most reliably learnable part of the domain.

Costs

The list must be memorised; nothing in the meaning of the conjunctions predicts membership.

GRM-04e

The hypothetical period

Standard

Se il divieto fosse inefficace, i dati lo mostrerebbero.

The tellSe plus imperfect subjunctive, paired with a conditional in the other clause.

Gains

The construction that most looks like advanced Italian when handled cleanly.

Costs

Both halves have to be right at once, and Spanish pairs them differently enough to mislead.

GRM-04f

Imperfect subjunctive for politeness

Standard

Le sarei grato se mi facesse sapere entro venerdì.

The tellA conditional plus an imperfect subjunctive doing the work of a request.

Gains

The high formal politeness move, and it fits Anchor A exactly.

Costs

Used repeatedly it reads as obsequious, which in a complaint weakens you.

GRM-04g

Trapassato congiuntivo

Standard

Se avessi saputo dell'addebito, avrei disdetto prima.

The tellA counterfactual about the past: had I known.

Gains

The full hypothetical system, and the form that carries regret and blame.

Costs

Four verb forms have to agree across two clauses, so it is where a sentence most easily collapses.

GRM-04h

Indicative after penso che

Regional

Penso che è un errore — ordinary speech, outside the codified standard

The tellA verb of opinion with the indicative.

Gains

What Italians increasingly say, and recognising it stops you correcting native speech that is simply spoken.

Costs

Marked wrong in writing and in both exam lanes, and it is precisely the form an examiner is watching for.

GRM-04i

Subjunctive avoided by restructuring

Standard

Immagino un errore. · Chiedo l'accredito. — a noun where a clause would have been

The tellNo subordinate clause, so no mood decision arises.

Gains

Always correct, often shorter, and it raises the register rather than lowering it.

Costs

In an exam that is testing the subjunctive, systematic avoidance is itself visible.

GRM-04j

Subjunctive over-applied

Standard

So che sia vero — wrong: sapere asserts, so it takes the indicative

The tellA subjunctive after a verb of certainty.

Gains

On the sheet because it is the error that arrives after the subjunctive is learned, and it reads as trying too hard.

Costs

Wrong in every register, and more conspicuous than the under-use it was meant to fix.
